Drivers in Nottinghamshire might want to ease off the accelerator — and not just because it’s the right thing to do.
A new study has revealed that the UK’s most active speed camera sits right here in our patch — on the A38 Kings Mill Road East/Sutton Road junction in Sutton-in-Ashfield — catching a jaw-dropping 24,311 motorists in just 12 months.
That’s nearly 500 a week, or one every 22 minutes, making it Britain’s busiest speed trap and potentially generating more than £2.4 million in fines last year alone.
And in a twist of local irony… the county that tops the list for speeding offences is also home to us here at Road Angel HQ — the Nottinghamshire-based tech firm helping drivers stay alert, informed, and on the right side of the law.
‘Speed on green’ — the hidden hazard
The Sutton-in-Ashfield camera isn’t a typical roadside trap. It’s a ‘speed on green’ system designed to catch drivers who accelerate to beat changing traffic lights. That makes it a double threat for anyone who thinks they can sneak through on amber — and a clear example of how modern enforcement is evolving.
Across the UK, similar dual-function and AI-assisted cameras are now being deployed, capable of detecting speeding, phone use, and even whether you’re wearing a seatbelt.
A view from home turf
Gary Digva, founder of Nottinghamshire-based Road Angel, said:
“It’s ironic but fitting that Britain’s busiest speed camera is right here in Nottinghamshire — the same county where we’ve built technology to help prevent drivers from becoming statistics.
The reality is that most people don’t set out to speed — they lose awareness because limits and road layouts keep changing. That’s where smart, driver-friendly tech makes a real difference.”
The Road Angel takeaway
With over nine million speeding offences logged nationally in the past three years, it’s clear that technology will continue to shape how we all drive — for better or worse.
At least in Nottinghamshire, we’re leading both sides of the charge: one camera catching speeders, and one company helping everyone else stay safely ahead of the game.
